Opposition supporters in the nation of Georgia hold a poster of U.S. President-elect Barack Obama, reading &8220;America We Believe In.&8221; The protest rally occurred in the capital, Tbilisi, on Nov. 7. By Robert Scheer!–No related Q & A — So, Vladimir Putin was right: It was Georgia that started the war with Russia, and once again it was President Bush who got caught in a lie. As The New York Times reported last week, “Newly available accounts by independent military observers of the beginning of the war between Georgia and Russia this summer call into question the long-standing Georgian assertion that it was acting defensively against separatist and Russian aggression.”The Bush White House knew—but kept from the American public—facts concerning provocation by Georgia’s U.S.-trained forces, which killed civilians in the capital of South Ossetia before Russian troops crossed the border. The provocation has also been documented in a BBC investigative report and by a growing consensus of other reliable sources. No surprise, but it is a reminder of just how eager some are for a new Cold War and how indifferent they are to the truth of the matter. The career hawks are influential in both political parties, as was evidenced by the knee-jerk response of both presidential candidates, who claimed that the Russians had launched a totally unprovoked attack.Sen. John McCain, whose top foreign policy adviser had been a paid lobbyist for Georgia, was most eager to confront the Russians, while Sen. Barack Obama was a bit more cautious. But as recently as in his Oct. 29 infomercial, Obama promised to “curb Russian aggression,” which hardly suggests the change we need from the unilateral belligerence of the Bush foreign policy. The result of that policy has been increased estrangement from the one country whose cooperation is totally indispensable in the effort to control the spread of nuclear weapons, given that Russia possesses roughly half of the world’s nuclear arsenal and the ready means to build more nuclear arms. Yet instead of putting up a common front against nuclear proliferation, and even before the Georgia fracas, the Bush administration insisted on placing missiles on Russia’s borders in a deal-breaker with Putin, whom President George W. Bush had previously embraced.
As the present lifestyle trend turns toward an even fast-pace, many individuals would find it difficult to go about their daily duties without their own vehicle. However, with the problems the economy is now facing, people are especially careful in spending their money and investments. Many are looking into alternative means of buying cars, and are even considering the merits of used cars. Many are looking into alternative means of buying cars, and are even considering the merits of used cars. Car auctions are venues wherein mostly (but not all) previously owned vehicles are sold using an auction system. While most nations have local auto auctions in different locations, most people often remain unaware of them. This is mainly due to the fact that auto auctions are a protected source for car dealers, and are closed to the general public. Thus, most of them are private auctions, although there are some that in varying degrees are open to the public. The common consensus is that the first practical automobiles equipped with gasoline-powered internal combustion engines were designed by several independent German inventors in over the same period of time. One such inventor, Karl Benz, had put together his first automobile in 1885 in Mannheim, and was granted a patent for this design on January 29, 1886. He began the first production of such automobiles in 1888. Not long after this, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach designed a vehicle in Stuttgart in 1889. Starting from scratch, this was to be an automobile instead of being a horse-drawn carriage with an engine. Both are commonly credited as inventors of the first motorcycle in 1886. However, Enrico Bernardi of Italy patented one-cylinder petrol motor in 1882. He fitted this into his son’s tricycle. In 1892 he expanded the design to carry two adults. Since these are previously owned cars, interested parties need to gather information first in order to make the best possible purchase. A potential buyer needs to know the details of the car’s make, model, physical condition, and many other things, in order to decide which car would best fit his needs. Some auto auctions do not provide pre-sale vehicle inspection or test-driving. Mechanics and guests are prohibited to view and test the vehicles until after the sale is completed. However, Alameda County Auctions provides previews for their vehicles on sale. They offer a wide range of quality pre-owned vehicles, some of which are luxury cars, and many of which are still under warranty. How to pick an automatic online backup service and/or local backup softwareAre you concerned about the safekeeping of your photos, e-mails, address book, Favorites, etc. that you have on your computer? Yes? Well, that’s a good thing because sooner or later your hard drive will fail or get so corrupted you will have to format it…losing everything.Hi! Al Stewart here. I was a computer technician for 30 years and I have seen thousands of hard drives fail. Hard drives fail on laptop computers and million dollar main frame computers too. The life expectancy of consumer hard drives is approximately 4 years. There is nothing you can do to prevent hard drive failure, but there is a lot you can do to prevent the loss of your valuable files, but you must do it before your drive fails. That brings us to the subject of this article: The various ways to automatically make backup copies of your data. When you get right down to it, a “backup” is made any time you copy something to a new location. If you download a photo from the Internet and then save it to a CD you have made a backup because you now have two copies, each on different media. One is on your hard drive and one is on the CD. That’s a manual backup. As a regular method of protecting your data, manual backups have little value because; Most people simply don’t do it very often Most people don’t do it on a regular schedule Most people don’t have time to mess with it Most people don’t have the desire to file all the backup CDs Most people don’t have the time to discard the old CDs, or better yet for security reasons, destroying the old CDs before discarding them.Fortunately the software industry has come to our rescue with programs that will automatically backup everything you save and do it in such a way that you won’t even notice it is happening. Before looking at what’s available we need to understand these two terms;”Files” backup and “Disk” also known as “Image” backupFiles backup – When you or your backup software saves a copy of directories and the files they contain a file backup is created. If you set your software to backup all the files on your hard drive and if (when!) your drive fails all your photos, e-mails, etc., will be available for restoring to your new drive and you will have lost nothing. However, your operating system and your programs will NOT have been backed up. But that’s not so bad, because you already have the original CDs from when you bought the software. You just have to install each program again, set it up like you like it, and download the latest security updates.Disk/Image backup – When your software backs up the entire hard drive including the Operating System, programs, special settings, and all your files, you have created a disk or image backup. This is sometimes known as “cloning” or “ghosting” your hard drive. This type of backup is very useful if you want to replace your hard drive with a new, bigger one, or if you replace your computer. When you restore the disk/image backup to the new drive you will find everything exactly as it was before replacing the drive…all without having to reinstall any software or entering any settings again. So why wouldn’t you always make a disk/image backup since it includes everything and you don’t have to reinstall any programs when your drive fails? Good question! And the answer is based on where you save the backup. This is real basic, and you probably already know it, but if you have one hard drive and save your backup on that drive, you don’t really have a backup at all. When your drive fails it takes both copies of your data with it.You have a couple of choices of where to save your backup: A second hard drive in, or attached to, your computer or an off site backup machine, also known as an Internet backupLet’s look at the pros and cons of each backup location:Second hard drive – Pros: Everything you create is automatically backed up. Old backups are automatically replaced by the new. Suitable for either file backup or disk/image backup. Restoration speed – a large drive can be restored in a few hours One time cost for the second drive. Cons: Your backup is in the same room as your original data. Fire, flood, power surge, or theft will destroy all your data. Just like it happened to me, a computer problem can corrupt the original as well as the backup copies.Off site backup – Pros: Everything you create is automatically backed up Old backups are automatically replaced by the new Nothing can destroy both copies of your data Cons: You pay for the service – about $5 a month A large hard drive can take days to restore You are limited to a file backupSo where should I save my backup? Another good question! The answer is found in what’s important to you.Since the whole idea of an automatic backup is to safeguard your data, I recommend the most reliable and safe, off site backup. Your data will be there no matter what!If you use your computer in a business, where a lengthy down-time while you restore files and install software would cost you money, you ALSO want a local backup on your second drive. That combination will give you fast recovery from the local drive AND absolutely safe and reliable backup copies of your files from the online machine if needed. When my backup drive failed at the same instant my primary drive failed I was VERY thankful I also had off site backup. It took two weeks to restore all my files, but without it, I would have been permanently out of business.Don’t put if off. Your drive is going to fail.In summary – For the shortest amount of time to get your computer running again buy a LOCAL backup program. For the peace of mind that comes from knowing your data is absolutely safe and secure subscribe to an off site backup service. For the best of both worlds, get both a local program and an off site backup service. Can’t get both? Then you should get one of the off site services. Having your data secure and safe is the goal of any backup system, and for that you want an off site solution.p class=”articletext”

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) announced from the Senate on Monday that the Senate Judiciary Committee will begin the confirmation hearings for Judge Sonia Sotomayor on Monday, July 13.Get the newPD toolbar!Scheduling of the hearings has been a key sticking point between Democrats and Republicans in the Senate. Democrats wanted a fast start to Sotomayor’s official confirmation process, while Republicans said they needed more time, at least until September, to wade through the reams of information on her judicial and legal record. The July 13 date is a victory for Senate Democrats. On the Senate floor, Leahy said, “I have talked and met with Senator Sessions, the committee’s ranking member, several times to discuss the scheduling of this hearing. I will continue to consult with Senator Sessions to ensure that we hold a fair hearing . . .This is a reasonable schedule that is in line with past experience and that will allow several more weeks for committee members to prepare for the hearing.”Leahy said he initially wanted to begin the hearings on July 7 but agreed to delay the process for one week to allow Republicans more time to review Sotomayor’s lengthy record. Leahy said the full Senate would begin debate on Sotomayor’s nomination the first week in August, and would work to hold a vote before their scheduled Aug. 7 adjournment.Leahy warned last week, and repeated today, that Republican attacks on Sotomayor as a “racist” only served to speed the process. “There is no reason to unduly delay consideration of this well-qualified nominee,” he said. “Indeed, given the attacks on her character, there are compelling reasons to proceed even ahead of this schedule. She deserves the earliest opportunity to respond to those attacks.” For his part, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), the committee’s leading Republican, has argued that the attacks on Sotomayor have come not from Republican senators but from the chattering class of pundits and former Republican officials. Sessions had wanted the confirmation process to be allowed to go into September, but committed to finishing the process before the Supreme Court’s opening day in early October. After meeting with Sotomayor last week, Sessions said, “The Senate owes her a fair hearing. She will get a fair hearing.”iFollow PoliticsDaily On Facebook and Twitter, and download the new Politics Daily toolbar!

Eco-arts agitator Bruce Caron withdrew his application to paint a 1,000-foot light blue line on downtown city streets to show where the sea level may rise as a result of global warming. Caron decided to cancel his controversial Light Blue Line after hearing from Mayor Marty Blum and Councilmember Helene Schneider-supporters of the project-that the project had generated too much opposition, particularly from real estate interests worried the project would lower property values.
