LOS ANGELES – A historian’s report that the wreckage of an Air Force jet lost at sea 54 years ago has been found off the Southern California coast brought a surge of emotions for Thomas Theiler, 77, a retired executive and former Air Force pilot.
Theiler’s older brother, Richard Martin Theiler, was in the front seat of a Lockheed-Martin T-33A that went missing just after take-off from the Los Angeles International Airport on Oct. 15, 1955.
Aviation archeologist G. Pat Macha said Tuesday that he and a group of volunteers found Theiler’s plane underneath 100 feet of water earlier this month.
When Theiler, of Savannah, Ga., was informed, he was shocked to find himself grieving for his brother all over again, 54 years later.
“He was five years older than me, a good athlete and everyone loved him, so there was a lot of hero worship involved,” said Thomas Theiler, who followed his older brother into the Air Force. “He probably got his wings two years before I did. We were buddies.”
Macha, 63, is an amateur historian who collects documents about military plane crashes. He is heading up a search for another historic wreck in Santa Monica Bay, a plane flown by a female World War II pilot who disappeared in 1944.
In April, a sonar survey turned up another missing aircraft, and Macha said he identified it by matching Air Force records to the serial number on a piece of the wreckage that the salt water had spared.
The Joint Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Command says it appears likely Macha’s finding on the Air Force jet lost at sea 54 years ago are correct, but Lt. Col. Wayne Perry says the command plans to investigate further and determine whether the water is shallow enough to recover the wreckage.
Thomas Theiler said his brother had a wife and a 6-month-old son. Both died years ago.
The younger Theiler also lost a close friend from flight school that day, Lt. Paul Dale Smith, who was in the cockpit. Smith and the elder Theiler were training to fly with the Aerospace Defense Command and practicing navigation and night flying.
Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Jack Ewell said his department notified Theiler.
“It’s particularly shocking because it’s so long ago. It’s not like people are just sitting and waiting for news,” Ewell said.
Divers are examining the site, but there’s only a remote chance that they’ll find personal effects, remains or any clue about why the plane went down, he said.
The plane had just departed in bad weather bound for its base in Yuma, Ariz., but the pilots didn’t make contact after they cleared the clouds.
At his base in Minneapolis, Theiler got word that his brother and friend were missing and a commander gave him a plane to fly to Yuma and wait for news.
“A pickup drove up with a wheel that a lifeguard found. It was from a military aircraft and they don’t just float up onto the beach. So we knew what happened,” Theiler said.
Macha said Theiler and his daughter got emotional when he spoke with them on the phone.
Theresa Morton, of Lake Forest, Ill., the dead pilot’s niece, grew up imagining her uncle living on a desert island with his friend Smith.
She said she was grateful to Macha for helping write a closing chapter to her family history.
“This news has rocked our world, but on the other hand, it’s really neat,” she said. “I’ve been pulling out all the family photos, my dad’s fighter wings, to show to my kids. It makes for wonderful family time.”

China finds bird-like dinosaur with four wings
Chinese researchers have unearthed the fossil of a bird-like dinosaur with four wings in northeastern China, which they suggest is a missing link in dinosaurs’ evolution into birds.
In a paper in the journal Nature, they said they found the well-preserved fossil of the “Anchiornis huxleyi,” which roamed the earth some 160 million years ago, in a geological formation in China’s northeastern Liaoning province.
About the size of a chicken, the fossil has a total body length of less than 50cm (20 inches) and a skull about 6cm long, lead researcher Xing Xu at the Chinese Academy of Science in Beijing told Reuters in an email.
“This finding suggests that birds are likely to be descended from a kind of small-sized four-winged dinosaur about 160 million years ago,” Xu said.
“It is a link between more typical theropods (dinosaurs which moved around with two rear limbs) and birds. It lived around a time period … that we expected for birds’ ancestor.”
In a statement, the researchers said: “Long feathers cover the arms and tail, but also the feet, suggesting that a four-winged stage may have existed in the transition to birds.”
The transition from dinosaurs to birds is still poorly understood because of the lack of well-preserved fossils, and many scientists say bird-like dinosaurs appear too late in the fossil record to be the true ancestors of birds.
The Chinese researchers believe the fossil is the oldest bird-like dinosaur reported so far, and older than Archaeopteryx, the earliest known bird.
“The presence of such a species at this time in the fossil record effectively disputes the argument that bird-like dinosaurs appeared too late to be the ancestors of birds,” they wrote.
Tigers maintain two-game lead over Twins
The Detroit Tigers restored their two-game lead over Minnesota in the American League Central after a workhorse effort from pitcher Justin Verlander guided them to a 6-5 win in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday.
The Twins took the earlier game 3-2 to cut Detroit’s lead in the division to one, but Verlander logged eight innings and closer Fernando Rodney allowed one run and survived a shaky ninth for his 36th save of the year.
The Twins (82-75) trailed 5-0 in the fifth but rallied with two runs in both the sixth and eighth innings against Verlander, who struck out eight on the way to his career best-tying 18th win of the season.
“We love when (Verlander) is out there. He’s been a bulldog for us and when he’s pitching you’re always going to have a chance to win,” Detroit third baseman Brandon Inge told reporters.
“We know the standings and that Minnesota is going to be in it. This is about as much of a playoff game as you’re going to get in the regular season.”
LATE-SEASON DRAMA
The Tigers held a commanding seven-game division lead on September 6 but the red-hot Twins have created late-season drama as Detroit try to win their first division title since 1987.
Tuesday’s late game went down to the wire when Minnesota’s Nick Punto hit an RBI double in the ninth to make it a one-run game and he was standing on second when Denard Span flied out to left field to end the game.
Curtis Granderson put Detroit (84-73) up 6-4 in the eighth with his 30th home run of the year.
In the earlier game, Minnesota scored twice in the 10th inning for a dramatic 3-2 win.
Orlando Cabrera had the go-ahead single and Delmon Young added a sacrifice-fly against Detroit’s Brandon Lyon in the 10th. Granderson hit a solo homer in the bottom half of the inning to make it interesting for reliever Joe Nathan, who picked up his 45th save.
Nick Blackburn guided the Twins with seven innings pitched and just one run allowed.
“We got the first one, wanted the second one really bad but faced a really good pitcher,” said Twins manager Ron Gardenhire. “This is not what we came here for today. We’ll be back tomorrow, I can promise you that.”
Minnesota will start Carl Pavano against Tigers pitcher Eddie Bonine Wednesday when the teams meet for a third time in a four-game series that may decide the AL Central race.
Finally, Robert Lang has come back to Phoenix
You remember the 1992 Phoenix Roadrunners, right? David Goverde in goal? Guy Leveque was the leading scorer with 27? A 26-50-6 record in the IHL under legendary former Atlanta Thrashers assistant coach Tim Bothwell?
Oh, yeah: Some dude named Robert Lang(notes), making his North American debut with 30 points in 39 games.
He was a Los Angeles Kings farmhand back then. Now, it’s come full circle, as Fanster explains:
Fast forward 15 years, and Lang is back in Phoenix, this time with the Phoenix Coyotes of the NHL. The club signed the veteran 38-year old center to a one-year contract earlier today.
The Coyotes signing Lang is sort of a perfect match: A broken down hockey vagabond no one really believes can remain healthy enough to succeed … and Robert Lang.
The Montreal Canadiens were Lang’s seventh NHL team, and he had 39 points in 50 games before he severed his Achilles tendon in a game against the Bruins and had season-ending surgery. It would be the most horrific thing to emerge from the Feb. 1 game, had it not been for those barber pole jerseys.
For the Coyotes, it’s a welcome addition to an offense that needed another center and more self-starters — Lang’s an instant-offense guy. Plus, there are four Czechs in the locker room. Hope Hanzal and Michalek enjoy “when I was your age” stories …
Central-leading Tigers beat Twins 6-5 to split DH
Justin Verlander(notes) kept the Tigers on top in the AL Central, pitching eight innings in a 6-5 victory Tuesday night that restored their two-game lead over the scrappy Twins.
“After the first game, this win was huge,” Verlander acknowledged.
Indeed.
It wasn’t easy, but it never is against the pesky Twins.
“They showed whey they’re so good,” Detroit manager Jim Leyland said.
Minnesota briefly pulled within one game of the Tigers when it won the doubleheader opener 3-2 in 10 innings. Brandon Lyon(notes) (6-5) set up Orlando Cabrera’s(notes) go-ahead single with a pair of wild pitches.
If the Tigers can beat the Twins at home on Wednesday and Thursday, they’ll win their first division title since 1987.
If Detroit doesn’t take the next two games of the series, the AL Central won’t be decided until the weekend—or early next week—with each team closing the regular season with a three-game set.
Minnesota has clinched the season series and would host the tiebreaker if one is necessary, likely on Tuesday because Brett Favre and the Vikings are playing Green Bay on Monday night at the Metrodome.
“This is playoff baseball—we just got started a little early this year,” Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire said.
The intensity of the day, with the crowd focused on every pitch, certainly had the feel of October baseball.
Verlander (18-9) struck out eight, giving him a baseball-best 264 this season, and allowed four runs and eight hits on a season-high 129 pitches. Fernando Rodney(notes) pitched the ninth for his 36th save in 37 chances, overcoming shaky defense that allowed Minnesota to pull within a run.
Brian Duensing(notes) (5-2) gave up five runs over 4 2-3 innings in his ninth career start for the Twins, who had a chance to at least tie the game in the eighth and ninth.
Delmon Young(notes) started the Minnesota ninth with an infield single that was misplayed by second baseman Placido Polanco(notes). Rodney retired the next two batters and Nick Punto(notes) followed with a fly ball to center that Curtis Granderson(notes) misjudged, allowing it to go over his head and helping the Twins pull within a run.
“You’re looking for a break and we got one there,” Gardenhire said.
Rodney then got Denard Span(notes) to hit a game-ending fly to left.
And, the Motor City exhaled.
Detroit finished the day in the same position it was at the start of the doubleheader, delighting the crowd of 30,240.

“I thought both teams put on a good show for the fans for this time of year in a pennant race,” Leyland said.
Gardenhire agreed.
“If you didn’t enjoy today with these two games, you aren’t much of a baseball fan,” Gardenhire said.
Verlander set the tone early in the nightcap, retiring the side on swinging strikeouts in the second as part of a dominating stretch in which he retired 10 straight.
“There were innings where we didn’t have much of a chance,” Gardenhire said. “And, he was still winging it at 98 after 120-some pitches. That guy’s a stud.”
Miguel Cabrera(notes) hit a no-doubt homer to left. Magglio Ordonez(notes), who started the day hitting an AL-best .408 in September, put Detroit ahead 3-0 in the third with a sharply hit double.

Detroit’s Brandon Inge(notes)—the first to face Bobby Keppel(notes)—hit a two-run single in the fifth inning for a 5-0 lead.
Minnesota pushed across two in the sixth and two in the eighth to get within one.
The Twins had their star, Joe Mauer(notes), at the plate with two on and one out in the eighth. Verlander threw a wild pitch, allowing the runners to advance to scoring position, and Mauer hit a run-scoring groundout.
“That was big with him up in that situation,” Verlander said. “Who knows what happens if he does more than that.”
Jason Kubel(notes) followed with an RBI double. Leyland left the dugout for a brief chat with Verlander, whose glove covered his mouth on the mound, and the ace stayed in the game.

“I basically told him, ‘I don’t have anybody better than you,”’ Leyland recalled. “That’s the line I usually use and with him, I mean it.”
Verlander validated the decision when Michael Cuddyer(notes) grounded out.
“I knew he was staying in,” Cuddyer said. “There was no way that Justin Verlander was going to let anyone him take him out of that game.”
Granderson hit his 30th homer in the eighth to give Detroit a two-run cushion that proved to be important.
Jon Rauch(notes) (4-1) earned the win in the first game and Joe Nathan(notes) picked up his career-high 45th save.
NOTES: Verlander tied his career high in wins. … Granderson homered for the third straight game. … No major league team has remained in first place from May 10—or sooner—until losing the division title in the last week of a season, according to STATS LLC. … Mauer decided to catch the second game instead of serving as the team’s DH. “Joe came in and told me he was good to go. When Joe Mauer says he’s catching, I’m not going to argue with him,” Gardenhire said.

Facebook yanks poll asking whether to kill Obama
SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) – The US Secret Service is trying to identify the people who launched an online poll at Facebook asking whether US President Barack Obama should be assassinated.
Facebook on Monday shut down the user-generated poll, which was titled “Should Obama be killed?” and offered answer choices of yes, no, maybe, and “If he cuts my health care.”
“Once we found out about it, we worked with Facebook to have it removed,” Secret Service spokesman Malcolm Wiley told AFP.
“We are certainly investigating; just like we would with any threat case.”
More than 750 Facebook users had reportedly cast votes by the time the poll was yanked from the wildly popular online social networking community.
“This is sick and sad,” a Facebook user with the screen name Cocoa Fly said in a posting as the poll fueled passionate online exchanges at the website.
“All of this anti-Obama rage is pure racism.”
The poll was created over the weekend using a third-party application that lets users conduct their own surveys, according to Facebook spokesman Barry Schnitt.
“People were usually doing trivial polls like asking friends where they should go for dinner or what they thought of a certain movie,” Schnitt said of the application.
“Then there was the offensive one created by an individual user.”
Facebook had to shut down the program to get rid of the Obama poll since surveys using the software were controlled by the outside developer.
The application will remain disabled until the developer assures Facebook that the controversial survey has been removed and there are policies and procedures for handling such concerns in the future, according to Schnitt.
“Of course we are offended by the content of the poll but objectionable ideas are in the world and, unfortunately, manifest on Facebook,” Schnitt told AFP.
“We felt we dealt with it in a responsible way by removing it as quick as we were notified.”
Schnitt declined to discuss the Secret Service investigation.
Bullard closes on return
Hull midfielder Jimmy Bullard has been pencilled in to make his long-awaited return from injury next week.
Bullard has played just 37 minutes for Hull since signing in January due to a serious knee injury.
The 30-year-old is back in full training and Tigers boss Phil Brown is hoping he can get a run-out in next week’s reserve-team clash with Bolton and, if all goes to plan, could return to the first team for the game against former club Fulham on 19th October.
“The plan of attack with Jimmy will mean his comeback game will probably be against Bolton in the reserves next Tuesday at North Ferriby,” Brown told the Hull Daily Mail.
“Hopefully, one or two supporters will get the chance to see him in a Hull City strip and fingers crossed, we’ll see where that takes us.
“We’ll have the game against Bolton and then a game against opposition behind closed doors the following week before he can then play some part in the Fulham game.
“We’ll have to be patient with him and understand that it might take three, four or five games before we see his best.
“But I’m hopeful of the fact Jimmy can come in and play a big part in a big season for us.”
The return of Bullard will provide a boost for Brown as pressure grows on him following their poor start to the season.
2011 Volvo S60 Set to Tackle 3 Series, A4 Head On
Volvo’s 2011 S60 sedan will be "remarkably close" to the 2009 Detroit show concept in its outline and proportions, a company marketing executive told Motor Trend. While it loses the suicide doors and glass interior, there is much that can be inferred from the concept.
Former design director Steve Mattin finalized the exterior, which means more curves and more flamboyant surfaces than we’ve come to expect from Volvo: It’s more XC60 than S80. and the concept’s "four-door coupe" roofline remains.
This is the first Volvo to have dimensions placing it head to head with German premium makers. Previous Volvos were half a class between the Germans: The old S60 was smaller than the 5 Series BMW of its day but bigger than a 3 Series. The new one will tackle the 3 Series and Audi A4 head on. "If we were a market leader, we could do cars outside the established size classes, but at our size we can’t," our source said. This applies to pricing, engine for engine, and equipment in addition to size.
A V60 wagon version of the S60 is planned, fitting below the V70.The S60 and V60 will be available globally in four-, five-, and six-cylinder versions, most of them turbos, and diesels for Europe. The U.S. should get the turbo five, the 3.2-liter, 235-horsepower inline-six, and 3.0-liter turbo six making about 280 horsepower. AWD will again be available.
