Early trends indicate a significant boost for the industry, with operators already reporting a 10 per cent increase in visitor numbers, Tourism Minister Jodi McKay said on Tuesday.

“It’s no secret 2009 has been a difficult time for tourism operators across the state,” Ms McKay said.

“We are expecting a billion dollar boom over this summer period in Sydney and NSW.”

She said that as well as Sydney, regional and coastal operators were expecting a strong summer trade, with more families opting for cheaper alternatives like caravan and camping holidays.

The Australian Hotels Association (AHA) attributes the growth to a return to better economic times.

“We are definitely going to see some upswing after the global financial crisis,” AHA accommodation division chairman Richard Munro said.

“We have started to see a little bit of that in the last month or so, with people coming out of their shells from the GFC.”

Smaller operators are also rejoicing.

Tourism Industry Council general manager Brian Hardiman says 2010 will bring a great improvement after the industry was knocked by the economic downturn and swine flu.

“We really needed a shot in the arm and I believe we are going to get it” he said.

Ms McKay said a number of events over summer including the Sydney Festival, New Year’s Eve celebrations – expected to draw 1.5 million people to the harbour – the tennis and cricket will play a significant role in attracting both domestic and international visitors to the state.
